Every year South Bank hosts over 150 events such as the Out Of The Box Festival, RiverFire, and the Regional Flavours Food Festival which draws hundreds of people to Brisbane for the weekend.
Families wishing to visit South Bank can take advantage of two of Brisbane’s best playgrounds, Streets Beach Lagoon as well as the Aquativity area with pools in between. Brisbane has created a space for cyclists to ride and enjoy the river views through the wide pathways set out for both bikes and pedestrians.
Getting To South Bank Brisbane
The trip to South Bank offers many options. You can travel by city cat from one of the many terminals for under $10, getting off right at South Banks doorstep. South Bank hosts one of Australia leading art museums – QAGOMA is open daily from 10am – 5pm. Entry to QAGOMA is free however some exhibitions & events will require a paid entry.

Brisbane Museum also has different exhibitions on including Dinosaur Discovery: Lost Creatures of the Cretaceous. This Exhibition has now finished for the season and it is now Townsville’s turn. South Bank is tourist friendly with heavily signed areas, maps for locating your next stop and walkways throughout the 17 Hectares of parkland. The Wheel Of Brisbane, One of South Banks largest iconic features. The WOB opens until 11 pm on weekends so you can enjoy the city lights . Booking a family online will save you $6 (2 adults and 2 children 4-12 years). The Wheel is located at the Cultural Forecourt alongside the giant ever-changing BRISBANE lettering.
There is plenty on offer for all ages at South Bank. The riverside destination boats over 90 restaurants, Street Performers, An outdoor Amphitheatre and regular events designed for families. Young children can join The Little Days Out program which is held every Thursday from 9am-1pm.
Packing A Picnic For South Bank
If you prefer to pack your own lunches don’t worry, South Bank has you covered. Chairs are provided throughout the area including undercover areas. Picnic Island has free barbecues available and is adjacent to a playground for the kids to shake their sillies out.
When Your Tummy Is Full & You Can’t Walk Any More
Visit the Brisbane Cineplex for a movie. Under $10 for an Adult and $4.50 for a child, the former IMAX Cinema is an inexpensive treat especially during school holidays when the kids are bored and they can enjoy the whole of South Bank before and after seeing a film.
Laze around by the lifeguard manned pools listening to the distant sound of live music in the nearby restaurants and cafes. When you’re ready to head home I hope your experience is as exceptional as mine every single time.
